WSU Men's Track Signs Five Student-Athletes

Weber State men's track and field coach Dan Walker has announced the signing of five athletes to join the WSU program. The Wildcats have signed Derek Day (American Fork, Utah), Jonathan Mcune (Medford, Oregon), Anthony Osheku, Jr. (Salt Lake City), Braden Perry (Honeyville, Utah), and Alex Sorenson (Evanston, Wyoming) to join WSU for the 2011-12 school year.
"Our goal was to shore up our distance running group and we feel we've done that," Walker said. "We also had the chance to get a top hurdler. We are excited for this group to come in. We only lost a couple of seniors from last year's and we're excited to have this group join our team."
Derek Day comes to Weber State from American Fork High School in American Fork, Utah where he ran cross country and track and field. He was a part of the Cavemen team that won the state title in 2009 and 2010 and also won the Nike Cross Country western regionals. Day earned All-State Cross Country honors and from the Utah High School Track Coaches Association and the Deseret News. He also earned Academic All-Region Boys Track honors in 2010-11 and was recognized for Outstanding Academic performance for scoring in the top ten percent in the state on the ACT in math and science. Day is the son of Lynn and DeAnn Day.
Jonathan Mcune will join the Wildcats from Medford, Oregon where he graduated from North Medford High School. Mcune qualified for the state championships in the 110 meter hurdles all three years of high school and finished third in the event as a junior and fourth as a sophomore. He finished second in the 110 meter and 400 meter hurdles at the Oregon State Junior Olympic Championships in 2010. Mcune has posted career best times of 11.29 in the 100 meters, 14.34 in the 110 meter hurdles, 57.06 in the 400 meter hurdles, and a mark of 21-03.25 in the long jump. He graduated in the top of his class at North Medford High and is an AP Honors student and was Homecoming King. He is the son of Jon and Katherine Mcune.
Braden Perry comes to Weber State from Honeyville, Utah where he attended Box Elder High School and earned four letters in track and cross country. Perry won the Utah 4A title in the 3200 meters as a junior in 2010 and finished second in the event at the state meet as a senior. He also finished 11th in the state cross country championships. Perry is the son of Blair and Jeanne Perry.
Anthony Osheku, Jr. will join the Wildcat program from Highland High School in Salt Lake City. Osheku was born in Starkville, Mississippi but was raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He was the Utah state 4A champion in the 100 meter dash and also finished third in the 200 meters. He has posted career best times of 10.75 in the 100 meters and 21.95 in the 200 meters.
Alex Sorenson joins the Wildcats from Evanston, Wyoming where he graduated from Evanston High School. Sorenson was named the 2010-11 Gatorade cross country runner of the year for the state of Wyoming and was the state champion in cross country as a senior, the first male runner from Evanston High to win the state title. He also won the Wyoming 4A West Conference title as a junior and senior. He also placed ninth in the 2010 Nike Northwest region meet in Boise. In track and field Sorenson won the state title in the 1600 meters as a senior and was second in the 3200 meters and third in the 800 meters at the state meet. He won the conference title in all three events. He holds the Evanston High school record in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:33 and was named tem MVP as a junior and senior. Sorenson is the son of Bill and Laurie Sorenson.
