Crompton, Aki lead Wildcats to decisive home win

OGDEN, Utah - With the urgency of earning a postseason berth on the line, the Wildcats regained their form.
Freshman midfielder Chansi Crompton scored twice and dished off an assist, and senior forward Ari Aki added two more goals as the Weber State University women's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over Big Sky Conference newcomer North Dakota on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"It was a good win; we scored some nice goals today," Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. "I still feel like we can play better than we did, but we were able to get the result we needed."
Weber State improved to 5-3-0 (15 points) in Big Sky Conference action and moves into third place in the league standings with just one match remaining. The Wildcats can clinch their second consecutive postseason appearance on Saturday with a win over Northern Colorado.
Weber State jumped out early when Crompton scored her first goal in the 15th minute a penalty kick. Freshman forward Stacy Bair drew the foul that led to the spot kick, and Crompton calmed slotted it home for the 1-0 advantage.
North Dakota equalized the match in the 26th minute, with Rhaya Ballon scoring on a breakaway after a turnover by the Wildcats' defense at the edge of the third.
Things didn't stay even for long as Crompton teamed up with Aki to retake the lead in the 28th minute.
After a North Dakota foul just outside the box, Crompton sliced a free kick just around the defensive wall to Aki, who turned the ball and smashed it home to make it 2-1.
The Wildcats surged ahead 3-1 in the 37th minute when Crompton pounced on a rebound after a shot from junior forward Felicia Sortor was saved by North Dakota's goalkeeper and fired it over traffic from 30 yards out.
“It was nice to get some points up on the board,” Chansi Crompton said. “It's always good to get a win and we had a great team effort today. We are happy for the win and look forward to Saturday.”
Weber State continued to command the tempo of the match in the second half and slammed the door with a 90th minute strike by Aki that was assisted by Bair and London Crown.
Crompton's assist was her sixth of the season, leaving her tied for the most in the Big Sky this season and establishing a new Weber State record for most assists by a freshman in a single season.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday at Noon at Wildcat Soccer Field, wrapping up the regular season against Northern Colorado. The Bears are 4-2-2 (14 points) in Big Sky play and are coming off a 2-0 setback at Idaho State on Thursday.
