'Cats beat Southwest 110-45 for largest win ever

OGDEN - The Weber State men's basketball team recorded its largest margin of victory in school history with a 110-45 crushing defeat of the University of the Southwest Saturday night at the Dee Events Center.
Five players scored in double figures as the 'Cats cruised to the 65-point win over the NAIA school. With the win the Wildcats improve to 7-3 on the season and have won three straight and six of their last seven games.
Weber State shot 69 percent from the field for the night and held Southwest to just 28 percent shooting. WSU was 12-22 from three-point land and the 'Cats outrebounded the Mustangs 44-19. Weber State also had 22 assists, nine steals and six blocked shots.
The Wildcats held a 13-10 lead five minutes into the game when they exploded for an 18-0 run to lead 31-13 and never looked back. Weber State outscored the Mustangs 45-10 over the last 14:00 of the first half and shot 76 percent from the field in the half and made 10 three-pointers.
After the Mustangs scored first to start the second half Weber State went on a 17-0 run and led by as 69 points late in the second half in route to the win.
"This game did what we wanted it to after having some time off this week," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "We were able to get some other guys some playing time and the chance to do some new things. I thought our guys did a really good job of executing and staying within our system. We tried to focus on each possession and I thought the players responded well and did just that."
Scott Bamforth led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-8 from three-point land. Royce Williams posted career-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action off the bench. Freshman Joel Bolomboy also had a career-high with 16 points to go along with six rebounds. He was also a perfect 8-8 from the field.
Davion Berry added 15 points and Gelaun Wheelwright had 12. James Hajek started the game for Kyle Tresnak and finished with eight points and a career-best four blocked shots. Tresnak was held out of the game with a sprained ankle.
The game was an exhibition for Southwest, an NAIA school from Hobbs, New Mexico. The Mustangs are 3-8 on the season.
Weber State will now return to Big Sky action to start the new year when the 'Cats host Northern Colorado and North Dakota next Thursday and Saturday at the Dee Events Center.
