Wildcats Drop Tight Match to Aggies

LOGAN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team came up one point shy during an in-state battle on Wednesday, falling 4-3 to Utah State.
The Aggies won two of three doubles matches, which proved to be the deciding point of the match after the rivals split the six singles matches. Simon Unger and Oliver Good earned an 8-5 win over Sven Poslusny and Marcus Fritz in the No. 1 match. After Utah State took an 8-3 win at No. 3, the match came down to a battle at No. 2, where USU's Matt Sweet and Nate Ballam survived to take a 9-7 decision against Peter Ramstromer Pello and Caio Poitena.
In singles play, Unger, Ramstromer Pello, and Poitena each earned victories for the Wildcats, but the team could not come away with the final point that they needed to swing the match.
Unger defeated Poslusny 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 match, while Ramstromer Pello downed Fredrik Peterson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Poitena pulled out a tough 7-5, 7-6 decision against Lenny Whiting at No. 5 for the Wildcats' final point of the match.
After USU had won singles points at No. 2 and 3, the match came down to the No. 6 match, where WSU's Ryan Garner was facing off with Nate Ballam. Ballam took the opening set 6-4, but Garner bounced back to force a third set with a 7-6 win in the second set. The pair fought a tight battle again in the deciding set, but Garner came up one break short, as Ballam took the set 7-5.
The Wildcats dropped to 1-5 on the season with the loss. WSU will return to action on Saturday as they open up its Big Sky home schedule against Northern Arizona at 1:30 p.m. at the Ogden Athletic Club.
