Wildcats Take 6-1 Win Over Lumberjacks

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team opened up the 2012 Big Sky Conference home schedule with a win on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats defeated Northern Arizona 6-1 at the Ogden Athletic Club.
"The guys played really well today," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "After we let a close one get away from Utah State our last time out, it was encouraging to see us come out really focused and sharp today. This is a good conference win for us."
The Wildcats emerged with the match's opening point after a pair of battles in doubles. WSU grabbed the No. 1 match as Simon Unger and Oliver Good defeated Shaun Waters and Trevor Unger 8-5, which was a crucial win as the No. 2 and 3 spots came down to the wire. NAU's Robin Pezzuto and Dominic Bermudez defeated Caio Poitena and Peter Ramstromer Pello 9-8, but Weber State got the point as Ryan Garner and Dave Hintze won 9-8 over Ben Lantz and Patrick Schimmelbauer.
In singles, the Wildcats put the match away early as Ramstromer Pello, Poitena and Garner all won in straight-sets, giving WSU the four points necessary for the win.
Ramstromer Pello defeated Waters 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot to put WSU ahead 2-0 overall. Poitena downed Martin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5, and Garner defeated Trevor Unger 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Lumberjacks got their single point of the day as Bermudez rallied from a one set deficit to defeat Good, while Simon Unger and Hintze both turned the tables on their opponents with come-from-behind three-set wins.
The Wildcats improved to 2-5 on the season, ending a three-match skid, and moved to an even 1-1 in Big Sky play. NAU dropped to 2-4 overall and joined WSU at 1-1 in Big Sky play.
