CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Wildcats came up two runs short in their series finale against the Thunderbirds.

Despite cranking out 11 hits, the Weber State University softball team fell 8-6 to in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon at Kathryn Berg Field.

Senior Erika Dixon was 3-of-4 with three runs scored, while senior Lyndsey Minnich had two hits, including a three-run shot over the left field fence as the Wildcats tried to rally in the seventh inning. Symbree Minniear and Brooke Silva each added two hits for the Wildcats.

Weber State (4-9) took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Southern Utah countered in the bottom of the inning and then burst out to a 6-1 lead in the second. The Wildcats cut it to 7-3, before the Thunderbirds got one in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-3.

Dixon and Minniear hit back-to-back singles to set up Minnich's home run and cut it to two runs with no outs, but that's as close as the Wildcats would get on the afternoon.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday at the Colorado State Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., where they will face Northern Iowa, St. Mary's, and the host Rams for the five-game, three-day tournament.
