Wildcats Score Firsts in Win over ISU

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team scored a trio of firsts on Sunday as they pulled out a 4-3 win over Big Sky-rival Idaho State at the Ogden Athletic Club.
The win was the first of the young season for the Wildcats, moving the team to 1-2 on the year, and it was also the first career win for new head coach Brad Ferreira. Freshman Jakub Gewert added the final breakthrough, as he scored his first collegiate singles win, earning a critical point for the Wildcats.
"The boys played really well today," said Ferreira. "Our doubles dominated over a team that won the doubles point against Utah yesterday, and we had some key wins in singles. This is a great early season win for us against a Big Sky opponent."
The Wildcats got things going by sweeping a tight doubles competition. Freshmen Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami earned an 8-5 win over Austin Miller and Nate Gross in the No. 1 match to set the point up, and Caio Poitena and Oliver Good clinched with an 8-7 win over Jamey Swiggart and Christian Marian at No. 2. Anthony Trabert and Ryan Garner finished off the sweep with a 9-8 tiebreak win over Krzystof Stempien and Andres Coello at No. 3.
Gewert gave the Wildcats their second point of the day, as he earned the team's first singles win of the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Gross in the No. 3 match. Oliver Good then put the 'Cats within a point of clinching the win, after defeating Stempien 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles match.
Poitena earned the deciding point with a three-set victory over Coello in the No. 5 spot. Coello jumped out early, taking the first set 6-1, but Poitena bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second and a 6-2 win in the deciding third.
"Caio was really the man of the match for us," said Ferreira. "He really had not found his game in the preseason, or in our first two matches, and he was struggling in the first set today. Then he gutted out a couple of games to start the second set, and ended up playing incredibly well to win the deciding point. Hopefully, this will be the starting point for a good run of play for him."
