CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Weber State women's soccer team could not maintain its hot start to the 2013 Big Sky Conference season on Friday, as the Wildcats suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Southern Utah University.
After a scoreless first half, Weber State took the lead early in the second as freshman forward Lana Willard notched her first collegiate goal, scoring on an assist from Kendra Smith in the 49th minute.
The Thunderbirds equalized in the 51st minute as Megan Mower got loose behind the Wildcat defense and slotted a shot past WSU goalkeeper Danielle MacKay.
The score remained knotted at one goal apiece until the 85th minute, when Kaitlin Parkin scored on a header for the eventual game winner. Kirstin Anthony and Katie Jones received assists on the play.
"We've got to give SUU credit for this win," said WSU head coach Tim Crompton. "They played hard and physically tried to force us to play their style. We didn't deal with it as well as we would have liked, but we will refocus, put this behind us, and move forward."
The Wildcats were outshot 15-7 overall and 5-3 in shots-on-goal. MacKay recorded three saves in net for WSU, while SUU goalkeeper Elyssa Hashimoto recorded two stops to earn the win for the T-Birds.
Weber State falls to 6-3-2 overall, and 2-1-0 in Big Sky play, while Southern Utah improves to 4-7-0 on the season, and 1-1-0 in league play. The Wildcats remain on the road for one more match this week, as they head to Flagstaff, Ariz. to face Northern Arizona on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
