OREM – In their first game in 12 days the Weber State men's basketball team dropped a tough one 62-59 at Utah Valley Wednesday night at the UCCU Center.
The Wildcats led 57-56 with 1:57 to play when Holton Hunsaker made two free throws to regain the lead for the Wolverines. Hayes Garrity made a jumper with 45 seconds left to give UVU a three-point lead but Davion Berry's jumper cut the lead to one with 34 seconds left. The 'Cats got the ball back after a missed UVU free throw but Berry lost the ball in the paint and the Wolverines made two free throws. Berry's three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark to seal the win for the Wolverines.
“Utah Valley beat us tonight and they deserve a lot of credit for how they played,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “I thought we were out of sync and couldn't get any rhythm going until later in the game. We were very uncomfortable and the layoff hurt but I thought we really fought hard down the stretch and gave ourselves a chance to win the game. They just made one more play than we did at the end.”
UVU never trailed in the first half and held a 33-26 lead the break and led by as many as 11 points early in the second half. UVU led 39-28 with 18:00 to play when the Wildcats went on an 18-6 run and took their first lead at 46-45 after a Royce Williams three-pointer with 10:45 to play. From there it was a back-and-forth battle with eight lead changes in the final 10:00.
The Wildcats shot 38 percent from the field with UVU shooting 37 percent but the Wolverines outrebounded the 'Cats 43-35. UVU had 30 points in the paint, compared to 20 for the Wildcats.
Davion Berry led the way with 20 points, his fourth time scoring 20 or more points in five games this season. Berry was 4-10 from the field but 10-11 from the free throw line.
Joel Bolomboy had nine points and eight rebounds. Royce Williams had eight points and Richaud Gittens added seven off the bench.
The 'Cats are now 0-3 all-time at Utah Valley.
The game was just the fifth game of the season for the Wildcats who fall to 1-4 on the season. Weber State will return home to host Saint Katherine College next Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Dee Events Center.
