Wildcat softball twinbill suspended by darkness

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – It was a long day at the office for the Wildcats.

Aiming for a doubleheader split against Sacramento State on Friday, the Weber State University softball team was foiled by darkness in the 15th inning and will have to wait until Saturday afternoon to try to polish off a three-run lead with just three outs needed.

The Wildcats dropped a tough 3-0 decision to the Hornets in the day's opening game at Shea Stadium, but the nightcap living up to its billing as it drug on for 14 1/2 innings before be it was put on hold until 1 p.m. on Saturday to finish up.

Weber State scored three runs in the top of the 15 to take a 6-3 lead, and needs three outs to close down Sacramento State to even the series at 1-1. The third game of the series will take place after the conclusion of the suspended game.

The Wildcats were held to just one hit, a single by sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias, but left six runners stranded on base in taking the 3-0 loss. The Hornets scored all three runs in the third inning.

The second game reached four hours, 25 minutes before being suspended, with the Wildcat pitching staff having thrown 202 pitches to 60 batters. The Hornets' pitching staff faced 64 batters and had thrown 217 pitches.
