OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to in-state rival Southern Utah on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field.
The Wildcats dropped the opening game of the day 12-2 in five innings, with the game being interrupted for 15 minutes in the top of the fourth inning to allow the grounds crew to deal with moisture on the field. Weber State fought much tougher in the second game, but ultimately dropped a 6-2 decision to the Thunderbirds.
The Wildcats finished with 13 hits during the two games, including three-hit days from freshman second baseman Brooke Ford and freshman right fielder Rudi Barrios.
Freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo had two hits, including her first career home run in the second game as she blasted a pitch over the field at left center. Freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp also had two hits. Junior catcher Desiree Mejia had a double during the second game, as did junior right-hander Jasmine Ioane. Sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias also had a single.
Weber State fell behind early in both games, trailing 3-0 at the end of the first inning in game one and 5-0 in game two, forcing the Wildcats to try and play catch-up all afternoon.
Weber State (3-11 Big Sky, 8-34 overall) will wrap up the series with Southern Utah (7-4 Big Sky, 14-26 overall) on Saturday at Noon. It will be the final home game of the season for the Wildcats, with the team set to honor its lone senior – center fielder London Clarke – prior to the first pitch.
