Wildcats fall to Bengals in series finale

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Weber State University softball team dropped its series finale with rival Idaho State on Saturday, falling 9-3 to the Bengals at Miller Ranch Stadium.
The Wildcats had five hits, including RBI doubles from sophomore outfielder Kortney Jensen and freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp. Junior shortstop Brooke Silva had an RBI single, while freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo and sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias each had singles.
Weber State fell to 2-7 in Big Sky play with the loss (6-29 overall), while Idaho State improved to 4-2 in league action (16-18 overall).
The Wildcats took the lead early when Silva hit an RBI single to right field that scored Kulp to put WSU ahead 1-0 in the first. The Bengals scored twice in the first and added four unearned runs in the second to take a 6-1 lead.
Weber State's bats headed up in the fifth when Mathias singled, and then scored on a double by Jensen, who then scored on a double down the left field line by Kulp to cut it to 6-3, but Idaho State added three more in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats will step briefly out of non-conference action on Wednesday to face in-state rival Utah at Utah Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., with a second game to follow at 6:30 p.m.
Weber State will return to Big Sky action on Friday and Saturday against Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif.
