Wildcats Down Griffins 4-0 in Friendly

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season on Friday night with a dominating 4-0 win over Westminster College in an exhibition match at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"This was a good win to get us going," said WSU head coach Tim Crompton. "But we're definitely a work in progress. We were pretty sharp most of the night, but as we continue to put in the work that we've done since fall camp started, we'll hopefully tighten up the areas that we need to improve, and we'll get to where we need to be as the season goes along."
The Wildcats controlled play for the majority of the match, outshooting the Griffins 22-3 overall and 6-1 in shots on goal.
Mackenzie Harrison put WSU on the board in the 11th minute, taking a pass from Kendra Smith and firing a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the left post.
Smith added her second assist of the night, feeding Abbey Kennedy, who launched a shot from 25 yards, beating Westminster goalkeeper Jamie Wilkinson to the right post for a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Shaylee Peterson finished off the first half scoring with a goal in the 40th minute. The sophomore right back took the ball up the right sideline, cut back to her left and fired a shot from the right corner of the 18 to the far post.
Sarah Thurston added a final goal for Weber State in the 84th minute. The senior forward took a pass from Peterson and found the net from 20 yards out on the right side.
Ryann Waldman, Danielle MacKay and Sydnie Stokes all took turns in goal for Weber State, to share the clean sheet. The three were not challenged much all night, with Waldman recording the lone save of the group.
Weber State will open up the regular season on Friday, August 23 as they face the University of Idaho at 3:00 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field.
