OREM, Utah – With the clock winding down and a draw on the horizon, the Wildcats got selfish.
There would be no sharing on this night.
Junior midfielder Mackenzie Day latched onto the end of a through ball from sophomore defender Marissa Yamane and scored in the fourth minute of double overtime to lift the Weber State University women's soccer team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over in-state rival Utah Valley on Thursday night at Clyde Field.
Day's goal, her second of the season, moves the Wildcats to 2-0-1 and extends their overall unbeaten streak to six straight matches dating back to last season.
Weber State finished the night outshooting the host Wolverines 27-10, including 10-3 in shots on goal. Utah Valley only had one shot on goal during regulation, its 11th minute goal by Natalie Baker, which came after a failed clearance by the Wildcats on a counter attack.
Weber State repeatedly generated opportunities in the opening half of play, but found themselves trailing 1-0 at the break.
It didn't last very long into the second half.
Senior midfielder Alyssa Amano scored her first goal of the season in spectacular fashion, hitting floating chipper out of the deep right corner that sailed over the Wolverines' goalkeeper and into the upper left 90 of the goal to equalize the match.
The result also kept Weber State against Utah Valley, improving to 5-0-0 all-time against the Wolverines.
Weber State will return to action on Sept. 6 when the Wildcats head to Boise, Idaho, to take on Boise State.
