The Weber State women's cross country team placed 16th while the men's team placed 17th at the highly-competitive, 24-team Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The women's team was led by freshman Hailey Ricks who ran 21:58, good enough for 43rd overall. Freshman Summer Harper, who led the team two weeks ago at BYU, finished with the second-best time on the team Saturday at 22:15. That placed her 60th in the field.
Following Ricks and Harper was sophomore Jamie Stokes who finished with a time of 22:28. Freshman Kelsey Braithwaite clocked in at 23:13 to finish fourth on the team while freshman Ellie Child rounded out the team's top five with a time of 23:18.
“We had a lot of freshmen running,” head coach Paul Pilkington said, “and they are used to running alone. They're not used to running with so many people, but that's why we run this race—to gain some experience.”
The men's team was led by junior Trevor Ricks who's 25:03 time placed him 33rd overall in the meet. Thomas Worob's time of 25:37 placed him 79th overall and was the second-best time on the team.
Junior Tyler Robinson's 25:44 time was good enough for 90th overall and brought him in behind Worob for third on the team. Finishing fourth on the team was freshman Preston Johnson with a time of 26:24. Rounding out the top five was freshman Jacob Calvillo who recorded a time of 27:18.
“We had some guys sick so we only ran five guys,” Pilkington said. “Again, this race really helps with experience and we got that today.”
The Wildcats will return to action on October 19 at the Wisconsin Invitational at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
