GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado picked up a big early season conference win with a 70-51 victory over Weber State Thursday night at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. With the win the Bears improve to 3-0 in Big Sky play and 9-3 overall. Weber State falls to 5-6 and 2-1 in conference games.
The Bears shot 50 percent from the field and held Weber State to a season-low 37.8 percent shooting. WSU shot just 29 percent in the second half. The Bears also outrebounded the 'Cats 35-28 and Weber State committed 12 turnovers and had just eight points off the bench.
“I felt like it was men against boys out there tonight,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “Northern Colorado is a veteran team and their experience really showed. We had some careless turnovers and did some things we don't normally do and that sometimes happens in the first conference road game. We are a team that is still trying to find itself and need to keep working on fighting and getting better.”
There were nine lead changes in the first half but Northern Colorado closed the half on a 13-2 run and took a 35-26 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats cut the lead to seven points with 14:32 to play in the game but after a UNC three-pointer, WSU never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Bears extended their lead to 20 points with 5:18 to play after a 10-2 run and led by as many as 22 points.
Kyle Tresnak led Weber State with 14 points with 12 points coming in the first half. Tresnak was 7-15 from the field and blocked four shots.
Joel Bolomboy recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. He was 5-9 from the field and also added two blocked shots. Davion Berry added 13 points with 10 in the second half and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
Derrick Barden led Northern Colorado with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The Wildcats continue their Big Sky road trip Saturday when they play at North Dakota in a 1 p.m. Mountain time game. WSU will then play the next four games at the Dee Events Center.
