Singles Play Keys 5-2 Win over Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho -- The Wildcat men's tennis team earned its first win of the early 2014 season on Saturday with a 5-2 win over rival Idaho State in a non-conference matchup.
Idaho State picked up wins in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to earn the doubles point, but the Bengals could not keep pace in singles play, as Weber State stormed back with wins in the top five spots in the lineup to clinch the match.
Jakub Gewert and Landon Barlow each cruised to straight-sets wins. Gewert defeated Jamey Swiggart 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot, while Barlow downed Daniel Loebel 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5.
Oliver Good and Caio Poitena both also won in straight sets, but needed tiebreaks to win. Good escaped with a 6-5 (8-6) tiebreak in his first set against Austin Miller before winning 6-3 in the second set for a point in the No. 3 spot. Poitena, meanwhile, won 6-4 in his opening set, and needed a 6-5 (8-6) second-set tiebreak to finish off the win over Josh Goodwin at No. 4.
Todd Fought battled through three tough sets to earn the team's fifth point in a win over Krzysztof Stempien at No. 2. The sophomore won a pair of tiebreak sets to escape with a 6-5 (7-4), 3-6, 6-5 (7-5) win.
The Wildcats move to 1-2 overall on the season with the win after dropping their first two matches to BYU and Utah.
