HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Wildcats turned in one of their best statistical performances of the season on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately came up just short.
The Weber State University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Portland State at Hillsboro Stadium, despite outshooting the Vikings by a 14-7 count, including a missed penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
The Wildcats (1-5-0 Big Sky, 4-11-0 overall) fell behind in the third minute when the Vikings' Kayla Henningsen converted a shot off of a short corner by Cori Bianchi to take the lead. That would be Portland State's only shot on goal in the first hour of the match as Weber State's offense created wave after wave of opportunities.
WSU outshot the Vikings (3-2-1 Big Sky, 6-5-3 overall) 6-2 in the first half and continued to control the opportunities in the second half, including a ringer off the crossbar in the 68th minute from junior forward Mackenzie Harrison and Portland State goalkeeper Caitlin Plese's save of junior forward Stacy Bair's 83rd minute penalty attempt.
Weber State will return to action on Friday in its final road contest of the season when it travels to Moscow, Idaho, to face league newcomer Idaho at 4 p.m.
