OGDEN, Utah – It finally clicked for the Wildcats.
Junior forward Stacy Bair, junior forward Mackenzie Harrison and redshirt freshman midfielder Kelsi Tatton each tallied a goal to lead the Weber State University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
“All I can say is that it is about time,” said Bair, who upped her season goal total to four with her 51st minute strike. “We were due for a win for how well we have been playing in our previous games. I am so proud of my team and I think the new formation has been helping us a lot. Today we became a team again.”
Weber State seized control of Sunday's match early and never let go, with Harrison punching the ball into the back of the net in the 11th minute to put the Wildcats in front for good after she collected a rebound from senior midfielder Mackenzie Peck's initial shot.
The Wildcats' offense finished the contest with a season-high 31 shots, placing 15 on frame as North Dakota goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen finished with 12 saves to her credit.
Weber State had 18 of those 31 shots in the opening half as it carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
“It was nice to see the girls break through today, they have played well over the past few games,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “I like the way they have gotten better over the past couple weeks. Now it is time to get ready to go to Sacramento State and Portland State this week.”
With Weber State leading 1-0 coming out of the break, Bair wasted no time in doubling up that advantage as she turned on the jets going down the left side, outracing two North Dakota defenders off a long leading pass from junior central defender Brecken Holbrook before turning and smashing a left-to-right shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats wrapped up the scoring in the 67th minute when Harrison raced down the left side and fired a pass across the goalmouth to Tatton, who tapped in a short-ranged shot to make it 3-0.
Defensively, Weber State notched its first shutout of the season, allowing just three shots on goal as redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sydnie Stokes picked up her second win in the net.
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday when they travel to Sacramento, Calif., to face Sacramento State, before heading to Portland, Ore., next Sunday to take on Portland State.
