SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Wildcats came up just short of the Hornets on Friday afternoon.
Despite playing with a line-up the seemingly becomes more depleted by the day, the Weber State University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Sacramento State before falling 2-0 on a pair of goals in the final half-hour at Hornet Field.
Weber State (1-4-0 Big Sky, 4-10-0 overall) started the match sharply and closed down the Sacramento State attack until the Hornets' Maggie Pleis scored after a corner kick to put the Hornets (1-4 Big Sky, 6-8 overall) up by a goal in the 64th minute.
Sacramento State added a second goal in the 78th when Shelby Salvacion corralled a deflected cross off the end line and scored from 15 yard out to make it 2-0.
The Hornets finished with an ever-so-slight 13-11 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 margin in shots on frame.
Weber State will return to action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Ore., to face Portland State, a rematch of last season's Big Sky Conference tournament championship match, which the Wildcats claimed. Kickoff against the Vikings is set for 2 p.m.
