LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Wildcats got this Valentine's Day off to a sweetheart of a start.

Senior shortstop Brooke Silva hit a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the 7th inning lifting the Weber State University softball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Texas Tech to kick off the Troy Cox Classic on Friday afternoon at the New Mexico State University Softball Complex.

Silva, who hit her first home run of the season in the third inning, went 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI for the game. The Sparks, Nev.,-native also had a first-inning double for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-2 with their third straight win.

Sophomore right fielder Rudi Barrios, sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp and junior catcher Mylee Davis each recorded a hit, with Barrios hitting a fifth-inning double.

Weber State took a 1-0 lead on Silva's solo shot over the left field wall, and junior right-hander MaCauley Flint made it stand up until the fifth, when the Red Raiders hit consecutive singles to put runners in the corners with no outs. Ioane relieved Flint, with both runners on eventually coming across the plate to put Texas Tech up 2-1.

Weber State got the tying run to third base in the bottom half of the inning, but came up a play short of pulling even.

Sophomore second baseman Brooke Ford drew a walk to lead off the seventh, with junior Brooke Boggess coming in as a pinch runner, and then freshman Sara Hingsberger, a pinch hitter, got on after being hit by a pitch. After freshman Katelyn Robison returned to the lineup in place of Hingsberger on first base, right fielder Junior center fielder Malia Campos, the Wildcats' leadoff hitter, advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. A strikeout set the stage for Silva's final at-bat heroics as she smashed an 0-2 pitch up the middle to bring Boggess and Robinson across for the win.

Iowa State 8, Weber State 6

In the second game of the day, the Wildcats fell in a hard-fought contest against the undefeated Cyclones.

Brooke Silva went 2-for-3 with a home run, while Mylee Davis was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and sophomore Krystin Kubo hit a two-run homer.

Weber State stormed out to a 3-0 lead behind a five-hit first inning, highlighted by a doubled from Rudi Barrios and RBI singles from Jasmine Ioane, Davis and Alyson Kulp

Iowa State got its bats hot in the second, third, and fourth innings, pushing eight runs across to take an 8-3 lead at the end of four.

The Wildcats' offense regained some traction in the sixth, with Silva hitting a solo shot over the left field fence for the second time on the day. Junior Janel Cunningham, pinch-hitting for Davis, got on with a walk, and Kubo drilled her second home run of the season over deep center field to cut the deficit back to two.

That, however, was as close as Weber State (4-3) would come as Iowa State retired the final five Wildcat batters in order.

Weber State will be back in action on Saturday, facing Texas Tech a second time at 11 a.m., followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1:30 p.m., before wrapping up the tournament on Sunday against Northern Colorado.
