LAS VEGAS – The Wildcats are getting pretty good at this tournament opener thing.
For the third consecutive time this season, the Weber State University softball team grinded out a win to kick off a non-conference tournament.
With junior right-hander MaCauley Flint surrendering just two hits, the Wildcats edged past New Mexico State 5-3 to open the Eller Media Stadium Classic on Friday morning.
Weber State improved to 7-4 overall with the win, moving three games over .500 for the first time in 32 years
Junior center fielder Malia Campos, the Wildcats' leadoff hitter, went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, while freshman second baseman Mackenzi Corta went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp, batting at the No. 2 spot, smashed a two-run shot over the left field fence in the third inning as Weber State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2.
Corta and Campos each singled to lead off the fifth, with the Wildcats going ahead 4-2 after the Aggies' catcher threw past first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Kulp, sending the ball to the outfield fence, and both crossed the plate on the play.
WSU added to its lead in the sixth after Campos hit a fly ball to left field, scoring freshman right fielder Katelyn Robinson from third to make it 5-2.
New Mexico State hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Aggies could get no closer in having its eight-game winning streak snapped and falling to 10-6.
Flint, who improved to 4-1 on the mound, threw her third complete game of the year and finished with eight strikeouts.
Weber State's scheduled second game on Friday against DePaul was halted in the fourth inning with the Blue Demons leading 8-3. The game will resume on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. MT, weather permitting. The Wildcats' schedule game against DePaul, which was set for Saturday morning has been cancelled.
WSU is still slated to face Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, and host UNLV at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
