WSU Hands Northern Colorado First Conference Loss

GREELEY, Colo. -- The Weber State men's tennis team wrapped up a two-match road swing to Colorado on Sunday, scoring a convincing 6-1 win over Northern Colorado, which led the Big Sky Conference standings heading into the day with a 4-0 league record.
The Wildcats pulled out a pair of tough doubles matches to secure the opening point. Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert defeated Mitchel Knight and Jacob Sheldon 8-6 in the No. 2 match, while Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena downed Jeff Carlson and Jordan Loughnan in an 8-7 (7-5) tiebreak win at No. 3.
In singles, the Wildcats won five of six matches to run away with the win. Fought cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Knight in the No. 2 match, and Good took down Austin Mayo 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 match to put WSU within a point of clinching the match.
After Gewert retired from his match due to injury for the Bears' lone point of the day in the No. 1 match, the Wildcats won a pair of three-set matches to secure the win.
Caio Poitena rallied from a one-set deficit to beat Jordan Loughnan 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 match, and Barlow scored a 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 win over Eric Schuermans in the No. 5 match.
Sanjay Goswami also forced a third set after falling behind, but scored a tiebreak win in the third to defeat Michael Moya 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
The Wildcats improved to 7-7 overall on the season, and stayed perfect in Big Sky play after two league matches.
