OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats got almost everything right on Friday afternoon.

Everything except getting runs across the plate.

Despite a pair of strong pitching performances and a solid day defensively, the Weber State University softball team couldn't get the run support it needed in dropping both ends of its Big Sky Conference doubleheader with Northern Colorado at Wildcat Softball Complex.

The Wildcats lost a 3-0 decision to the Bears in the opening game, before coming up just short during a rally in the second and falling 4-3.

Weber State dropped to 1-4 in Big Sky play (18-14 overall), while Northern Colorado improved to 2-0 (11-24 overall).

The Wildcats held the Bears to just nine hits in the two games, but three of those were solo shots over the fence that accounted for nearly half of UNC's offensive production.

WSU had 11 hits, including eight in the second game, but ended three different innings with a runner on third base – stranding 14 baserunners in all.

Junior catch Mylee Davis finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate, recording three singles, while junior center fielder Malia Campos was 2-for-6 with an RBI double.

Freshman right fielder Sara Hingsberger and sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp each hit triples during the second game.

The first game turned into a pitcher's duel between Weber State's MaCauley Flint and Northern Colorado's Breeanna Holliday, who a solo home run from the Bears' Nicole Hudson being the only mark on the scoreboard through the first six innings.

UNC finally broke things up in the top of the seventh, with Morgan Yuhas narrowly beating the throw on a bunt to give the Bears two runners on with one out, and Northern Colorado eventually pushed two runs across the plate to make it 3-0.

In the second game, the Bears had an RBI double in the first inning, a solo shot in the second, and a solo homer in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Weber State pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning, with Kulp tripling down the right field line and then scoring after the Bears' first baseman mishandled a throw from third base to make it 3-1.

UNC answered back in the fourth to make it 4-1, but WSU finally started finding some offensive rhythm in the bottom half of the inning after Hingsberger reached to second base on a field error by the Bears' shortstop. Sophomore first baseman Krystin Kubo singled to left field, moving Hingsberger to third and sophomore second baseman Brooke Ford scored her during a fielder's choice to left field to make it 4-2. Campos hit an RBI double to score Ford, and the Wildcats had a chance to keep the rally going but came up just short after Kulp field out deep at center field.

WSU had the tying run at third base in the fifth and sixth innings, but came up a play short both times.

Weber State and Northern Colorado will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday at Noon at Wildcat Softball Complex.
