BOISE, Idaho – Despite outhitting both opponents on Saturday afternoon, the Weber State University softball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as the Wildcats were swept by Valparaiso and Indiana during day two of the SpringHill Suites Invitational.
Weber State pounded out 12 hits, including three home runs, against Valparaiso, but couldn't overcome a disastrous start in a 10-7 loss to the Crusaders at Boise State's Dona Larsen Park.
Sophomore second baseman Brooke Ford went 2-for-4 with two home runs, while sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp, senior shortstop Brooke Silva, and senior designated player/right-hander Jasmine Ioane each had two hits for WSU.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Valpo scored five of their own in the first and added three more in the second to take a 8-2 lead.
Weber State cut it back to 8-4 on the first of Ford's two shots over the left field fence in the fourth inning, but the Crusaders scored two more in their half of the inning to push it back to a six-run advantage.
Ford and Kulp each hit home runs during the sixth inning as the Wildcats tried to rally, cutting the deficit to 10-6, and then made it 10-7 in the seventh when freshman left fielder brought home junior catcher Mylee Davis, but that's as close as WSU would come.
Against Indiana, a 5-1 defeat, in the second game of the day, the Wildcats' suffered just their second loss of the season with junior right-hander MaCauley Flint on the mound. Flint threw eight strikeouts against two walks and two hit batters, and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing the Hoosiers to erase a 1-0 Weber State lead with a home run over the left field fence.
The sixth inning proved to be the Wildcats' undoing as Indiana led off with a triple, a walk and a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs.
After Flint drew a strike out and a foul out, it looked like Weber State might escape unscathed, but back-to-back errors on the Wildcats brought four Indiana runs across the plate, and WSU was unable to answer in the seventh.
Weber State dropped to 11-7 overall and will wrap up its participation in the SpringHill Suites Invitational against Boise State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
