Wildcats Roll to Win on Senior Day

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team celebrated the career of four seniors on Saturday at Edman Courts, and in the process, clinched no worse than a share of the Big Sky regular season championship with a 7-0 win over Southern Utah.
"This was a great day for us," said WSU head coach Brad Ferreira. "Being able to honor four seniors who are exemplary student-athletes, and to have the team play really good tennis across the lineup and achieve our goal of winning the regular season title is very satisfying."
Oliver Good, Caio Poitena and Ryan Garner each played his second-to-last home match for Weber State, and each won in both singles and doubles to lead the 'Cats to the sweep. Anthony Trabert is also a senior with the team, but did not play against the Thunderbirds.
Good and Garner teamed in the No. 1 doubles match. The pair cruised to an 8-1 win over Blair Robbins and Troy Benson, as did Sanjay Goswami and James Smith over Alex Dial and Branden Olcott in the No. 2 match. Poitena and Dylan Hansel added a 8-3 win over Ammon Story and Mitchell John at No. 3.
In singles play, the Wildcats continued their impressive play. Landon Barlow (No. 4 singles) and Goswami (No. 5) each scored perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Good followed closely behind with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 to clinch the match early for WSU.
Garner added a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 6 match, while Poitena won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Jakub Gewert scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1.
The Wildcats improved to 13-9 overall and remained unbeaten in Big Sky play at 9-0. WSU will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, April 16 against Idaho State in Ogden.
