WSU Bounces Back with Win over Colorado-Mesa

Wildcats Close Out Undefeated Big Sky Season

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team closed out the Big Sky Conference regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record on Wednesday after defeating Idaho State 6-1 at Edman Courts.

"(Idaho State) is a much better team than their record shows," said WSU head coach Brad Ferreira. "They came in playing with nothing to lose, and they battled us in several matches. . I'm proud of the way our guys came out determined to finish the season undefeated, and basically refused to lose. The match had a playoff atmosphere to it, and will be very good preparation for us with the conference tournament coming up."

"This was a nice win for us today," said WSU senior Oliver Good. "And to finish the conference season undefeated is fantastic. But all we've done is get there (to the Big Sky tournament). All that goes out the window now. It doesn't matter if we were seeded No. 1 or No. 6, we've got to go in and win the thing. No one remembers who won (the regular season title) if you don't win the tournament."

The Wildcats took two of three doubles matches to open the contest. Good and Sanjay Goswami defeated ISU's No. 1 team of Jamey Swiggert and Daniel Loebel 8-4, while Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena defeated Josh Goodwin and Cody Miller 8-4 at No. 3 for WSU's two wins.

In singles play, the Bengals came out strong, and pushed five of the six matches to three sets. Goswami was the lone Wildcat to get a win in straight sets, easily downing Cody Miller 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 match to put WSU ahead 2-0.

In the No. 1 match, Jakub Gewert was swept in his opening set 6-0, but rallied to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-3 over Swiggert. Barlow also suffered a first set loss, but battled back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Bjorn Scheepbouwer in the No. 5 match.

Poitena took a 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 win over Josh Goodwin in the No. 4 match, and Good recorded a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Loebel in the No. 3 match.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season at 14-9 overall for the program's first winning season since 2008. Idaho State dropped to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in the Big Sky. Weber State will be the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament, which will be contested April 25-27 in Sacramento, Calif.
