Barlow Named Big Sky Player of the Week

Wildcats Advance to Big Sky Title Match

4/27/2014 2:14:00 AM | Men's Tennis

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The Weber State Men's Tennis team moved within one win of capturing its first conference championship in 22 years on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference postseason tournament.
"Sacramento State is always a great team, but have had some injuries this year," said WSU head coach Brad Ferreira.  "Sometimes you need some luck to win. Todd (Fought) played a fantastic match to seal the win that was set up with solid doubles and early wins by Landon (Barlow) and Sanjay (Goswami).

"Montana is a great team and we will have to play at our best to beat them. We have prepared as well as we possibly can, and we will see what tomorrow brings."
The Wildcats won the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 matches, and then won three times in singles against one defeat to finish off the victory.
Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena got things going for the Wildcats in doubles with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 match, and Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert followed with an 8-4 win at No. 2 for the point.
In singles, Barlow again led the way, scoring a 6-3, 7-5 win over Oliver Andersen in the No. 5 match, putting WSU ahead 2-0.
The Hornets responded with a win at No. 3, but they would get no closer as Weber State scored the next two points to close out the match.
Sanjay Goswami earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tom Miller in the No. 6 match, and Fought closed out the win with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Niranian Ram in the No. 2 match.
The Wildcats will face No. 2 seeded Montana in the championship match on Sunday after the Grizzles defeated Northern Arizona in the other semifinal.  The championship match will begin at 3:00 p.m. MDT.
Weber State, who has won 11 conference titles, last took home the crown in 1992.
