OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State University softball team came up short in a pair of must-win games on Friday afternoon, falling 11-1 in six innings and 4-3 to Sacramento State in Big Sky Conference action at Wildcat Softball Complex.
The Wildcats dropped to 2-9 in Big Sky play (20-23 overall), and were eliminated from contention in the four-team Big Sky Conference postseason tournament, which will be hosted by the league's regular season champion in two weeks.
Sacramento State (12-4 Big Sky, 23-19 overall), which had already clinched a tournament berth, will be joined by Idaho State, Southern Utah and Northern Colorado which all secure postseason berths with Friday's results in Ogden and Grand Forks, N.D.
Three Wildcats posted multiple hits on the day, with junior catcher Mylee Davis going 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, while senior shortstop Brooke Silva was 2-for-6 with a solo shot in the first game. Sophomore second baseman Alyson Kulp also finished the day with a pair of singles.
Silva's solo shot to left center in the first game tied things up at 1-1 in the first inning, but the Hornets responded with seven runs in the second inning to open up an 8-1 lead en route to the win.
Weber State started the second game strongly, taking a 1-0 lead in the first, after senior right-hander/designated player Jasmine Ioane hit an RBI double to center field that scored Kulp.
The Wildcats pushed out to a 3-0 lead in the second after junior first baseman Kylee Hogue singled and then Davis hit a two-run shot over the fence at center field.
The Hornets scored two in the third to make it 3-2, and then hit a lead-off home run in the fifth to tie things up at 3-3.
Sacramento State scored the winning run on a sacrifice bunt in the sixth to take the 4-3 lead, and the Wildcats couldn't push the needed run across the plate.
Weber State and Sacramento State are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series Saturday at Noon at Wildcat Softball Complex, with the Wildcats set to honor their three seniors.
