PORTLAND, Ore. – The 2014 iteration of the Weber State University softball team took its final bow on Saturday afternoon, closing the curtain on the season.
Despite a valiant attempt to rally from a five-run deficit, the Wildcats ultimately fell 5-3 to Portland State in Big Sky Conference action at Erv Lind Stadium.
Weber State finished its season with a 22-25 overall record (4-10 in league play), marking the most overall wins and best winning percentage for the Wildcat softball program during its new era of play, which began in 2010.
The game also brought to a close the careers of Weber State's three seniors, right-hander/designated player Jasmine Ioane, right-hander Kylee Colvin, and shortstop Brooke Silva.
Seven different Wildcats earned hits for Weber State on Saturday, with Silva hitting a two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning during WSU's rally attempt.
Sophomore third baseman Krystin Kubo had an RBI double in the sixth inning that made it 5-3, but the Wildcats' deficit ultimately proved to be too large to overcome.
Weber State went 2-1 during the three-game series with the Vikings, getting its first series win of the season. The Wildcats finished with 26 hits during the three-game series.
Weber State finished fifth in the final Big Sky Conference standings, just one position out of earning its first new-era postseason berth. Portland State, the defending league champion and preseason favorite, finished at 3-14 in Big Sky action, 8-36 overall.
