Wildcat soccer upset by Griffins in season opener

OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats only allowed one shot on goal on Friday night, unfortunately that's all it took.
Westminster's Abby Holbrook converted a 25-yard free kick from the right side that wrestled its way loose from the grip of WSU goalkeeper Danielle MacKay in the 79th minute and the Griffins pulled out a shocking 1-0 road upset of the Weber State University women's soccer team at Wildcat Soccer Field in WSU's 2014 season opener.
The Wildcats (0-1-0) outshot the Griffins 14-9 overall, including a 6-1 margin in shots on frame, but couldn't get the break they needed despite some stretches of quality possession.
Much like its exhibition draw with Utah State last weekend, Weber State was clearly the better team in the first half of the match in terms of possession and creation. The Wildcats had eight shots to the Griffins two in the first half, including five in the first 13 minutes.
Westminster created a flurry of shots early in the second half, sending several attempts wide in the opening 10 minutes of the half before the Weber State reasserted control.
The Griffins finished the match strongly, earning three corner kicks and three shots, one of which was Holbrook's decisive free kick.
Weber State will be back in action on Friday against Omaha at Wildcat Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
