OGDEN, Utah – Can lightning really strike the same place twice?
If you're Mackenzie Harrison it can.
Harrison, the reigning Big Sky Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player, calmly slotted home the match-winning goal in overtime on Sunday afternoon, lifting the Weber State University women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wyoming at Wildcat Soccer Field.
“We wanted to come out hard in the overtime and finish it off,” said Harrison, who also had an assist earlier in the match. “It was a great build up from the team and luckily I was in the position to finish it off.”
Wyoming never touched the ball during the overtime period as Weber State completed nine consecutive passes from kickoff, ending with a perfectly-weighted lay off from junior forward Stacy Bair to Harrison, whose goal came just 33 seconds into the extra session.
It's the second consecutive year that Harrison has delivered the match-winner for the Wildcats against the Cowgirls in a come-from-behind thriller. A season ago in Laramie, Wyo., Harrison scored twice – including the winner in the 88th minute – as Weber State topped Wyoming 3-2 after trailing by two goals early in the first half.
“It was a physical game today, and it took its toll on our roster,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “However, the players stepped up and stayed committed to our system of play. I was extremely impressed with our ability to stay focused and play for each other.”
The Cowgirls (1-3-0) opened up the match scoring in the 15th minute when Candace Scieberras latched onto a through ball from Alisha Bass and slotted it in from 15 yards out one-on-one with Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle MacKay.
Weber State (2-1-0) equalized in the 42nd minute when Mackenzie Peck ran onto a swinging right-to-left pass across the 18 from Harrison, and Peck punched the ball in past Wyoming's charging goalkeeper from 10 yards out.
The win wrapped up a three-match home stand for Weber State, which will venture away from Wildcat Soccer Field for the first time next weekend, traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Colorado College on Friday, and the New Mexico in a neutral field clash on Sunday.
