COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Wildcats injury-ravaged roster final caught up with it.
With six starters out of action due to injuries, and a seventh that went down after just 34 minutes, the Weber State University women's soccer team suffered a disheartening 5-2 defeat to Colorado College on Friday evening at Stewart Field.
Despite the key missing pieces, the Wildcats played strongly throughout most of the first half and for a portion of the second, but an eight-minute span of the second half proved to be too much to overcome.
The Tigers (2-1-1) scored four of their five goals in an 8:17 span in the middle of the second half, effectively killing off the Wildcats (2-2-0) hopes of rallying from what was just a one-goal halftime deficit.
Sophomore forward Lana Willard broke up Colorado College's shutout attempt in the 78th minute as she unleashed a 25 yard shot into the top right corner of the net, and junior central defender Brecken Holbrook smashed home a close-ranged shot from senior midfielder Kendra Smith's assist in the 83rd to give the Wildcats a second strike.
Weber State remains in Colorado Springs to take on New Mexico (0-1-0) on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Lobos fell 2-1 to Marquette in their season opener on Friday.
