COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With just two players available for replacement off the bench, the Wildcats dug deep and got it done.
Freshman outside midfielder Taryn Davies and junior forward Mackenzie Harrison each found the back of the net as the Weber State University women's soccer team gutted out a 2-1 victory over New Mexico on Sunday morning at Colorado College's Stewart Field.
“I'm extremely proud of how our players represented Weber State athletics today,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “They could have laid down and made excuses, however they stood tall and brought it for 90 minutes.
“This is an amazing group of kids, and I'm very fortunate to have the privilege of coaching them.”
The victory was a picture-perfect response by the Wildcats after the disappointment of a road loss to Colorado College on Friday evening.
Davies sprung free for her first collegiate goal off of Harrison's assist in the sixth minute of action, slotting home a left to right shot from 15 yards out.
New Mexico (0-2-0) answered back in the ninth minute, leveling the scoreline at 1-1 with a nine-yard shot from Lindsey Guice.
“The goal was a result of hard work from the team winning it back after we lost possession,” said Harrison, whose two goals and three assists lead the team with seven offensive points. “Everyone stepped up today and never gave up the whole 90 minutes. I was super proud of our team.
“It's easy to get down on ourselves when so many people are out for injuries, but the team stayed positive and pushed through it.”
Harrison found herself on the receiving end for the Wildcats' second goal, latching on to a pass from senior midfielder Kendra Smith, and driving home a wormburner from 25 yards out that went left-to-right across the goalmouth to put Weber State back in front to stay.
The goal was Harrison's second of the year and was her second match-winner in the Wildcats past three matches, with both coming against Mountain West Conference foes.
Weber State (3-2-0) scored at least two goals for the fourth consecutive match, and improved to 2-1-0 this season against Mountain West Conference opponents. The Wildcats also improved to 2-0-0 against the Lobos, with the teams meeting for the first time since the 1998 season.
Harrison, Smith, and junior central defender Brecken Holbrook were named to the All-Invitational Team.
Weber State will be back in action at home this weekend when it hosts Hawai'i at 3 p.m. on Friday, and then UTEP next Sunday at Noon.
