MISSOULA, Mont. – The Wildcats fell just short of goal in their Big Sky Conference opener.
The Weber State University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Montana at South Campus Stadium after Hallie Widner's 19th minute shot proved to be the difference in a hard-fought league clash.
Necessitated by the numerous injuries that have ravaged the squad, the Wildcats (0-1-0 Big Sky, 3-7-0 overall) were breaking in a formation change and turned in solid effort in its debut just days after making the decision to implement it.
“I felt like we played well; I'm certainly not disappointed with the players effort today,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “It's a long conference season and we just need to put this one behind us and move on to Eastern Washington.”
Widner's goal came from eight yards out in the box off an assist from Chloe Torres, who intercepted a failed clearance by the Wildcat defense and floated the ball in to Widner, who hit a high lofting shot just under the crossbar.
Montana's victory edged the Grizzlies ahead in the all-time 25-match series, with UM how leading 12-11-2.
Weber State will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Cheney, Wash., to take on Eastern Washington. Kickoff of the match is set for 1 p.m.
