CEDAR CITY, Utah – Three weeks ago, senior forward Stacy Bair was still searching for her first goal of the season.
Now, she's arguably the Big Sky Conference's hottest offensive player.
Bair scored twice, including the match-winner in the 88th minute as the Weber State University women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over in-state rival Southern Utah on Friday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field.
With the brace, her second in the last four matches, Bair now has five goals and four assists this season for 14 offensive points. She now has 16 career goals, tying her for the seventh-most in Weber State history.
“The girls battled all game,” said Weber State coach Tim Crompton, whose team has now won four straight games for the first time since 2009. “Stacy scored a couple of great goals.
“Southern Utah is not an easy place to play, however our girls never let that distract them. We stayed patient and continued to find our game. Give SUU credit, they played like their season was on the line and gave us all we could handle.”
Weber State (5-3-0 Big Sky, 9-7-1 overall) is currently fourth in the Big Sky Conference standings, and would clinch a berth in the league's postseason tournament with a win over Northern Arizona on Sunday in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Southern Utah (2-5-1 Big Sky, 7-8-1 overall) scored the matches opening goal in the 13th minute, banking a shot from distance off the underside of the crossbar than took a fortuitous home bounce across the goal line.
The Wildcats responded to the goal, which came decidedly against the current run of play, creating numerous chances and finally equalized in the 33rd minute when Bair headed home a cross from senior forward Mackenzie Harrison.
The assist gave Harrison her 60th career offensive point, making her just the third Weber State player to reach that plateau.
The second half was nearly one-way traffic for the Wildcats, who peppered the Thunderbirds goal over the final 45 minutes and were finally rewarded when freshman midfielder Madison Garlock chipped a cross from the deep right corner of the box across the goalmouth to Bair, who volleyed it home from 15 yards out to give Weber State the 2-1 lead with just 2:46 remaining.
Weber State will be back in action on Sunday afternoon against defending Big Sky Conference champion Northern Arizona. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
