FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – It took 20 years, but the Lumberjacks finally found a way to beat the Wildcats at home.
Northern Arizona's Torey Braly scored in the fifth minute of the first overtime period as NAU defeated the Weber State University women's soccer team 2-1 in extra time on Sunday afternoon at Lumberjack Stadium.
Despite the loss, its first-ever in Flagstaff, Weber State (5-4-0 Big Sky, 9-8-1 overall) clinched a berth in the Big Sky Conference championship tournament on Nov. 5-8 in Moscow, Idaho. The Wildcats' seeding will be determined by their season-finale against Idaho State on Friday afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute when sophomore forward Lana Willard converted a penalty kick after she was fouled turning the corner in the box. It was the culmination of a strong opening half for Weber State, which held Northern Arizona to just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Wildcats kept up the pace through much of the second half, repeatedly getting into dangerous position, but those opportunities came up short and the Lumberjacks capitalized during a scramble in the box, with NAU's Emily Wadell knocking home the equalizer from 18 yards out.
Weber State will wrap up regular season play on Friday at 4 p.m. at Davis Field in Pocatello, Idaho, against rival and travel partner Idaho State (0-9-0 Big Sky, 1-16-0 overall).
