Wildcats fall 73-68 to BYU in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY -- Weber State's hot start was not enough as the Wildcats had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 73-68 loss to BYU Saturday at the Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Weber State came out hot to start the game as the Wildcats made 12 of their first 14 shots from the field and led by as many as seven points at 35-28 with five minutes to play in the first half. The Cougars closed the first half on an 11-2 run and BYU led 39-37 at halftime despite the Wildcats shooting 66 percent from the field.
The Cougars started the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 48-39 lead and led by 12 points with 8:37 to play. The Wildcats got as close as three points in the final minute before two late BYU free throws.
“Our kids fought like crazy and showed some great toughness,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “There was a stretch at the end of the half and another stretch to start the second half where they got away from us a little bit. We were right there and had a chance against a really good team. I was proud of our effort and toughness.”
BYU shot 57 percent from the field while the Wildcats shot 50 percent. The 'Cats knocked down eight 3-pointers but and outrebounded the Cougars 30-27 but committed 17 turnovers.
Jeremy Senglin led the Wildcats with 20 points and dished out four assists. Joel Bolomboy recorded a double-double for the eighth time in eight games this season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Richaud Gittens added nine points off the bench and Zach Braxton and Kyndahl Hill each had eight.
Weber State falls to 5-3 on the season while BYU improves to 5-2 with its 13 straight victory over the Wildcats. WSU will be back on the road for another instate game next Wednesday at Utah Valley.
