Weber State splits a double header

Weber State University men's tennis team split a double header Saturday. They fell 4-3 to University of Missouri – Kansas City and defeated University of Nebraska – Omaha 7-0.
Against UMKC, Stefan Cooper defeated Airam Castellano 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles spot. Todd Fought defeated Andrey Smirnov 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles spot. Landon Barlow defeated Uldis Gaismins 6-2, 6-3. The combined efforts earned Weber State's three points for the match. Weber State battled in the doubles round but in the end were swept giving UMKC the win.
"We seem to have all the right pieces," Head Coach Brad Ferriera said. "We are just trying to figure out how to get it all together."
The Wildcats performed much better against UNO by picking up the 7-0 victory. Cooper continued his win streak on the day by defeating Colin Buckley 7-5, 6-3. Fought continued his streak in the No. 2 spot on the day defeated Erik Anderson, 6-0, 6-0. Barlow also took down his opponent for the second time by defeating John Ellis 6-2, 6-1. Dylan Hansel kept up his undefeated streak by defeating Marko Minic 6-4, 7-5.
The Wildcats swept the doubles match Cooper and Sanjay Goswami defeated Buckley and Nathan Greteman 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Fought and Barlow defeated Ignace Warson and Anderson 6-2. Hou-En Chen and Shao-Po Yin defeated Minic and Ellis in the No. 3 doubles spot 6-2.
 "We played much better in the doubles to get a good start to the match," Ferreira said.
The Wildcats are now 2-3 on the season and will next host St. Mary's Tuesday Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Ogden Recreation Club. The Wildcats will start Big Sky Conference play Feb. 27 against Sacramento State.Â
