'Cats defeat UC Riverside, fall to UNLV and NMSU

Weber State University men's tennis team hit the road to University of Nevada Las Vegas last weekend and defeated UC Riverside 6-1. The Wildcats dropped a match to UNLV 6-1 and New Mexico State 4-1.

Against UC Riverside, Todd Fought defeated Luis Gastao 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles spot. Stefan Cooper picked up a victory against Cooper Bridge 7-5, 7-5. Landon Barlow, Sanjay Goswami and Hou-En Chen all earned wins in the singles round of competition. In doubles competition, Goswami and Cooper took down Marcus Vizcarra and Sina Sharifi 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot and the team of Shao-Po Yin and Barlow took down Luis Gastao and Calvin Ngo 6-3. The combined efforts of the Wildcats led the team to the 6-1 match win.

"We have been working on doubles and it showed today as we got a great start to the match," Head Coach Brad Ferreira said. "All in all a very solid performance form everyone."

UNLV proved to be a tough opponent for Weber State. UNLV swept the doubles round of play quickly earning the first point of the match. Cooper took down Jakob Amilion 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the No. 3 singles spot earning the lone point for Weber State.

"UNLV was the toughest team we have faced so far," Ferreira said. "I was very happy with our effort today and very excited for the rest of the season. We kept up with an extremely good team."

The match against New Mexico State was a hard fought battle. In the singles competition Chen picked up the lone point for the Wildcats by defeating Paul Denele 6-2, 6-4. New Mexico State also claimed the doubles point. The team of Cooper and Goswami fell 6-4 to Strahinja Trecakov and Patrick Pfister. The team of Yin and Barlow fought hard but fell 6-4 to Germain Degardin and Charles Baron. New Mexico State claimed the match with a final score of 4-1.

"All the matches were extremely close," Ferreira said. "We played New Mexico State last year and I saw a huge improvement in our guys this year."

The Wildcats are now 4-6 on the season and will next take on the University of Utah Sat. February 21 at 5 p.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
