Wildcat softball splits DH with UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Wildcats picked up a split during the first day of their return to California.

The Weber State University softball team captured the second game of a doubleheader against UC Riverside on Wednesday afternoon, rolling to an 8-0 win over the Highlanders in six innings at Amy S. Harrison Park.

The Wildcats improved to 13-9 overall, snapping the Highlanders' seven-game winning streak in the process. UC Riverside (23-7) captured the first game 2-0 despite being outhit as the Purple and White stranded 10 base runners.

Junior first baseman Krystin Kubo was 3-for-3 with four RBI during the second game with, while senior center fielder and junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer each collected three hits.

Junior right-hander Sierra Whitmer improved to 4-1 in the circle, holding the Highlanders to just four hits and three walks in 5.0 shutout innings before turning the ball over to freshman right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling for the sixth.

Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp and Campos singled to lead off the first before a one-out double to left field by Whitmer brought Kulp home to make it 1-0. Freshman catcher Molly Horne singled up the middle to bring Campos home, making it 2-0, and Kubo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Whitmer and make it 3-0.

Aubrey Whitmer led off the third with her second double of the game, setting the stage for Kubo to bring her home with a two-out RBI single to right field.

Kulp and Campos reached with back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth, with Kulp scoring on a throwing error that left Campos at third, where she scored off a passed ball to make it 6-0. Kubo hit another two-out RBI single to left field to score junior Jazmine Thompson, pinch-running for Whitmer, to make it 7-0 through four.

Campos scored again in the sixth, crossing the plate on a one-out RBI single through the left side by Kubo.

It was just the second time this season the Highlanders had been run-ruled, dealing them just their second home setback in 15 games.

In the opening game, Weber State reached 10 times with five hits and five walks against Riverside ace Chelsea Ponce, but came up one play away several times with runners in scoring position, including during the first inning when the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs.

Both Highlander runs came during the bottom of the opening frame, with the game turning to a pitching and defensive duel over the final six inning.

Weber State will be back in action on Friday, kicking off the San Diego Classic II against UNLV at Sportsplex USA in Santee, Calif., with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. (2 p.m. Pacific), followed by a game against Harvard at 5:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. Pacific).

On Saturday, the Wildcats will meet Long Beach State at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. Pacific) and San Diego at 12:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. Pacific), before wrapping up the tournament on Sunday against Western Carolina at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. Pacific).
