SANTEE, Calif. – The Wildcats just keep finding ways to make big plays.

The Weber State University softball team earned a split during the second day of the San Diego Classic II on Saturday, using a thrilling 2-1 win over San Diego in the afternoon to bounce back from a tough 5-3 loss to Long Beach State during the morning.

Weber State, which improved to 16-10 overall, is now 3-1 through the first four games of the 15-team, 36-game super tournament hosted by San Diego State at Sportsplex USA in Santee.

The Purple and White (16-10) topped the Toreros in nail-biting fashion with freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff delivering a huge two-out RBI single to right field that scored sophomore right fielder Sara Hingsberger from second base.

Hingsberger led the inning off with a single to second and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior left fielder Rudi Barrios.

Freshman right-hander Bailey Seek earned her team-high five win of the season in the circle, scattering five hits through six innings, allowing only a two-out solo home run in the fifth. Senior right-hander MaCauley Flint picked her second save of the year, shutting down San Diego in the seventh to secure the win.

In the opening game of the day against Long Beach State, the 49ers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three and increased that to 5-0 in the fifth before the Weber State offense caught traction in the sixth.

Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp belted her fourth home run of the season, a one-out solo shot to left field, to make it 5-1, and junior first baseman Krystin Kubo hit a two-out, two RBI single to center field to bring the Wildcats within two, but that's as close as they would be able to get.

Weber State wraps up its final non-conference tournament on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. Pacific) against Western Carolina, and is set to play its first in-state game of the season on Wednesday when it travels to Orem, Utah, to face Utah Valley, before making its home – and Big Sky Conference – debut on Friday and Saturday against North Dakota.
