Wildcats Sweep Portland State for Fourth-Straight Win

The win is the fourth in a row for the Wildcats, who moved to 7-8 overall on the season and to a 2-1 mark in Big Sky Conference play.
"I'm very happy with the effort and the results that we saw out there," said WSU head coach Brad Ferreira. "We have a lot of respect for this Portland State team. They are much improved over some of the teams they've had in the past.
"They've done a good job recruiting and building the program. They came in with some sick players today who had to spend time at the hospital this weekend and they were very depleted physically. I give them credit for fighting through the match under tough circumstances, but it definitely played to our advantage and was a factor in what appeared to be an easy result for us."
WSU took all three doubles matches to get out to the early 1-0 lead. Stephan Cooper and Sanjay Goswami scored a 6-4 win over Ian Eisenhower and Stuart Tierney in the No. 1 match, while Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert downed Will Cochrane and Matt Pronesti 6-2 at No. 2 and Landon Barlow and Eddie Chen defeated Ethan Lopez and Nacor Ibanez 6-2.
"Our guys played really well today, especially in doubles," said Ferreira. "That has been our weakness this season, and to see a strong performance there is very encouraging."
In singles, the Wildcats took five of the six matches in straight sets, with only Goswami needing a third set at No. 5 to record a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Risenhoover.
In the top singles match, Gewert defeated Lopez 7-5, 6-1, and Cooper won 6-3, 1-0 at No. 2 after Tierney retired after only one game in the second set.
Fought earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pronesti in the No. 3 match, while Barlow and Chen each did not lose a game in wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
Portland State dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in Big Sky play with the loss.
