Wildcats Take Consolation Title at Cal Poly Match Play

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- The Weber State men's golf team won back-to-back matches to close out the Cal Poly Collegiate Match Play, taking the tournament's consolation championship at Cypress Ridge Golf Club.
In Monday's opening round, Weber State dropped a 3.5-1.5 decision to Cal Poly. Devon Purser halved his match with Camden Price, and Michael Johnson scored a 1-up victory over Mitchell Martin for WSU's points in the match.
On Monday afternoon, the Wildcats responded with a 3.5-1.5 win over Utah State, as Luke Crapo, Johnson, Lee Shepherd and Purser all scored. Purser again halved, this time against the Aggies' Grahm Schmaltz. Crapo downed Seokwon Jeon 4&3, while Johnson defeated Reed Platke 3&2 and Shepherd won 3&2 over Eli Rogers.
The win placed the Wildcats in the consolation title match, where the Wildcats were victorious with a 3.5-1.5 win over the Cal Poly B team. Purser finished off an undefeated tournament, this time scoring a full point with a 3&2 win over Johnny Castles. Colton Dallimore got on the board with a 3&2 win over Nick Englehardt, while Shepherd rolled to a 5&3 win over Grady Smith. Johnson joined Purser with an undefeated tournament, scoring a half point against Adam Yount.
For the tournament, Johnson went 2-0-1 to score a team-best 2 1/2 points. Purser earned two points with a 1-0-2 record, while Shepherd went 2-1-0 for another two points.
