'Cats continue win streak, takes down Idaho 5-2

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State men's tennis team added another win to its Big Sky win streak by taking down University of Idaho 5-2 Saturday afternoon.
The University of Idaho was tied with Weber State in Big Sky standings and were picked as No. 1 in the league in the preseason polls.
"Idaho was picked as first for a good reason," said WSU head Coach Brad Ferreira. "They are a very solid team. This was our first outdoor match on our home courts and it ended up being a beautiful day for a Wildcat win."
The Wildcats came out hard in doubles. The No. 2 and No.3 doubles matches could have gone either way but Jakub Gewert and Todd Fought came out on top of Odon Barta and Felipe Fonseca 7-5. Landon Barlow and Hou-En "Edward" Chen defeated Mark Kovacs and Sam Jankovich in the No. 3 spot 7-5. To sweep the doubles point Stefan Cooper and Sanjay Goswami defeated Cristobal Ramos and Jackson Varney in the No. 1 spot 6-3 picking up a crucial point for the Wildcats.
The singles matches started off with a win in the No. 6 spot by Goswami. Goswami defeated Jankovich 6-0, 6-0. After that Weber State dropped two sets at No. 2 and No. 5. But the Wildcats finished strong and earned three more victories to give the Wildcats the 5-2 victory.
Gewert defeated Odon 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles spot. Todd Fought defeated Ramos 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. The day was finished off by Barlow as he took down Varney 6-2, 6-1 to continue his Big Sky undefeated streak and increasing his consecutive singles wins to 14.
"Fought, Gewert and Barlow played very smart mature matches to seal the win for us," Ferreira said.
Weber State now increases to 11-9 overall on the season and is 6-1 in the Big Sky Conference. They will continue conference play Friday April 10 by taking on Southern Utah in Cedar City.
