Wildcats defeat Lumberjacks in narrow 4-3 win

Weber State's men's tennis team picked up its eighth straight Big Sky Conference win Sunday afternoon by taking down Northern Arizona in a close 4-3 match.
Weber State swept the doubles point which would end up being crucial to the victory. Stefan Cooper and Sanjay Goswami defeated Jordan Gobatie and Alexandre Locci 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Jakub Gewert and Todd Fought took down Eden Peleg and Adi Zilberstein 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. The team of Landon Barlow and Hou-en Chen picked up their seventh straight doubles win by defeating Kester Black and Felix Schumann 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
"We played the best doubles we've played all year," said head coach Brad Ferreira. "NAU has a great doubles line-up and it was crucial that we won the doubles point."
The singles matches were split evenly between the two teams. Weber State picked up a win in the No. 2 spot with Cooper defeating Locci 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot. Fought defeated Peleg 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Gewert fell in the No. 1 spot to Gobatie 6-4, 6-1 and Barlow's 15 match win streak came to an end as he fell for the first time in Big Sky play in a three set match to Black 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
"The singles conditions were tough for us to play in," Ferreira said. "The altitude made the ball fly faster and it was really windy. The boys worked through it and came out ahead."
The match came down to the No. 6 singles spot and Weber State's Goswami. Goswami was behind 3-5 in the third set of the match and came from behind to defeat Zilberstein with final scores of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to claim the 4-3 victory for the Wildcats.
Weber State is now 13-9 on the season and 8-1 in the Big Sky Conference. The men's tennis team will travel to Pocatello, Idaho to take on Idaho State Thursday, April 16 before finishing the regular season Sunday, April 19 at home against Northern Colorado.
