SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Weber State University softball team narrowly dropped its series finale against Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon, as the Hornets spoiled a no-hit bid from senior right-hander MaCauley Flint with two sixth inning hits in a 2-0 decision over the Wildcats at Shea Stadium.
Flint and Sacramento State ace Caitlin Brooks went toe-to-toe in a seven-inning pitcher's duel for the straight day, with combining for 10 strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
Weber State (10-6 Big Sky, 31-17 overall) had its best chance of the day to put a run on the board with the bases loaded in the sixth, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Sacramento State (12-6 Big Sky, 23-24 overall) got a one-out single up the middle and then hit a two-out, two-run home run to left center to take the lead.
Trailing by two runs, Stephanie Mathias – stepping in as a leadoff pinch-hitter – got on base, bringing the tying run to the plate with no outs, but the Wildcats were unable to make a move.
Weber State will step out of conference play one last time this season to take on in-state rival BYU on Tuesday night in Provo, Utah. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats will host their final Big Sky Conference series against Montana on Friday and Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field, looking to lock down their first-ever Big Sky Conference postseason tournament appearance.
