Wildcats blank Griffins for first win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Wildcats' young guns carried them across the finish line.
Freshman midfielder/forward Madison Garlock scored in the 73rd minute off an assist from freshman defender Olivia Hoddy, and freshman goalkeeper Nikki Pittman notched the shutout in goal as the Weber State University women's soccer team captured its first win of the season Friday night, downing in-state rival Westminster 1-0 at Dumke Field.
The Wildcats (1-2-0) dominated the Griffins, outshooting them 15-6 overall and 8-2 in shots on frame, but despite being in near-complete control of the match from start to finish, the breakthough didn't happen until 72:43 had run off the clock.
During the goal, the ball came in off a corner kick by junior central midfielder Chansi Crompton, and rattled around a couple of times before going outside to Hoddy. Hoddy sent it back in, where Garlock corralled it and put it far post from 12 yards out.
From there on, the Wildcat defense took over to lock down the Griffins as Pittman made a pair of saves and turned away six total shots in going the distance for her first career clean sheet.
Weber State improved to 2-1-0 all-time against Westminster, capturing the first-ever meeting between the two at Dumke Field, the Griffins' rooftop turf surface venue located on campus.
The Wildcats will depart for Phoenix on Saturday, and are set to get back to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Grand Canyon University. The Lopes are 2-0-0 this season, having rallied to defeat Northern Arizona in their season opener and then topping Colorado State on Friday night.
