Q-SQUARED: Freshman's brace helps Wildcats rally

OGDEN – In the end, it game down to Q-squared for the Wildcats.

Freshman forward Morgan Quarnberg scored her second and third goals of the season as the Weber State University women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to forge a 2-2 draw with Colorado College on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.

“The girls played well for long periods of time this afternoon, and we scored a couple of nice goals,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “We left points out on the field today, considering the amount of possession we had. All things considered though, I love the way we are improving with each game.”

Weber State (3-3-1) dominated possession from start to finish in the match, but found itself trailing 1-0 at halftime after the Tigers' Clara Richter hit blistering rocket off the underside of the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 38th minute.

Richter's goal came against the run of play, which had pretty much been one-way traffic against the Tigers in the opening frame.

Trailing at the break for the first time since Aug. 23 against nationally-ranked Duke, Weber State wasted no time in equalizing the contest in the second half.

Less than two minutes from the second-half whistle, senior forward Mackenzie Harrison buzzed a ball out of the deep left corner across the goalmouth, where Quarnberg corralled it about eight yards out and blasted it into the back of the net to level things at 1-1.

The Wildcats figured that since that play worked, they'd run it again in the 58th minute, this time with junior central midfielder Chansi Crompton working the strings on the left angle, before zipping a cross across the goalmouth to awaiting Quarnberg who blasted it inside the post to put Weber State in front 2-1.

Colorado College found an equalizer of its own, again coming off the run of play after a turnover near the leading edge of the middle third, and Sarah Schweiss hit a hard crossing left-to-right shot to level things at 2-2 in the 67th minute, and that's where they'd stay through the remainder of regulation and overtime, despite a couple of painfully close misses at the go-ahead goal for the Wildcats in the waning seconds of regulation and overtime.

Weber State will be back in action on Sunday when the Wildcats travel to Boise, Idaho, to face Boise State in their final non-conference road match. The Broncos are 1-3-2 after drawing Utah 1-1 on Friday afternoon.
