EL PASO, Texas – The Wildcats' winning streak came to an end under the hot Texas sun.
Forced to play the final 55 minutes at a man disadvantage, the Weber State University women's soccer team surrendered a trio of second half goals and fell 3-0 to UTEP on Sunday morning at University Soccer Field.
“We made progress in key parts of our game over the weekend,” Weber State University coach Tim Crompton said. “It was disappointing we played with 10 for a large chunk of the game, however, the girls have nothing to hang their heads about.
"They brought a great energy for 90 minutes, regardless of the circumstances.”
Weber State dropped to 3-3-0 with the loss, its first setback since falling to nationally-ranked Duke in Chapel Hill, N.C., back on Aug. 23.
The Wildcats were the aggressor and looked the better team in the opening half-hour of the match, dictating the pacing and tempo with a strong possession-oriented game plan.
That lasted until the 35th minute when Weber State was given a straight red for unsportsmanlike conduct during a throw-in situation, dropping the Wildcats to just 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Weber State kept the match on even terms until the 52nd minute, when UTEP converted a rebounded chance on a corner kick to make it 1-0 and then doubled up the advantage in the 57th minute on a second corner kick.
The Miners (3-3-0) added a final tally in the 81st minute to round out the scoring.
Weber State, which has play its first six matches of the season away from home, will make its 2015 home debut on Friday when the Wildcats host Colorado College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field.
